Configuring editors definitions

Learn how to configure Che editor definitions.

Prerequisites
  • An active kubectl session with administrative permissions to the Kubernetes cluster. See Overview of kubectl.

Procedure
  1. Create the my-editor-definition-devfile.yaml YAML file with the editor definition configuration.

    Make sure you provide the actual values for publisher and version under metadata.attributes. They are used to construct the editor id along with editor name in the following format publisher/name/version.

    Below you can find the supported values, including optional ones:

  2. Create a ConfigMap with the editor definition content:

    kubectl create configmap my-editor-definition --from-file=my-editor-definition-devfile.yaml -n eclipse-che
  3. Add the required labels to the ConfigMap:

    kubectl label configmap my-editor-definition app.kubernetes.io/part-of=che.eclipse.org app.kubernetes.io/component=editor-definition -n eclipse-che
  4. Refresh the Che Dashboard page to see new available editor.

Retrieving the editor definition

The editor definition is also served by the Che dashboard API from the following URL:

https://<che_fqdn>/dashboard/api/editors

For the example from Configuring editors definitions, the editor definition can be retrieved by accessing the following URL:

https://<che_fqdn>/dashboard/api/editors/devfile?che-editor=publisher/editor-name/version

When retrieving the editor definition from within the Kubernetes cluster, the Che dashboard API can be accessed via the dashboard service: http://che-dashboard.eclipse-che.svc.cluster.local:8080/dashboard/api/editors
